Frequently Asked Questions…

What Are Path Lights?
Path lights are a lighting fixture used to put light down on a sidewalk or path to add safety and beauty to your yard and landscape. Path lights can also be used as an area light to add light to a dark portion of the landscape or just to add an artistic flair to a dark landscape.
What is Spot Lighting Used for?
Spot lights are a very versatile fixture that can be used to put light in any directed area. Spot lights can be used to light a statue or sign to increase visibility at night. They can also be used to light walls and spots on your house to add a sense of size, to show off a special texture of the walls, or for safety. Spot lights can also be used in trees to light sitting areas for use at night or to light the trunk of a big beautiful tree.
How do I light up my trees?
We use a special fixture called an uplight to shine light up the tree trunk and into the tree canopy. Depending on the size of the tree, multiple lights and different wattage of lights may be needed.
What is a transformer and what size do I need?
A transformer is needed to turn standard line voltage (120V) into low voltage (12V). Transformers are rated in watts and sized in 300w increments. For Example: if you install three fixtures with 35w bulbs and eight fixtures with 20w bulbs, you would have 265w and therefore need a 300w transformer. ALthough, if you add another three fixtures at 15w each, you would have 310w and then need the next size transformer (600w).
Professional vs. Retail Lighting?
Both professional and retail lighting operate on the same basic principals. They both operate at 12V, use a two strand wire to supply the power, and come in many different styles. The reasons professional lighting is better than retail lighting is in the way they are manufactured and installed. Professional light fixtures are made of heavy duty materials and designed to last. The lighting installation is also done with waterproof connectors which help extend the life of the lighting installation where retail lights use a compression style connection which becomes corroded and rusted over time allowing the wire to degrade and break. Although the biggest and most noticeable difference is the fact that light from professional fixtures is brighter. The reason for this is that the standard wattage of a retail light is about 8w, while the standard wattage of professional lights is about 20w.
